The Lent Challenge

Today is Ash Wednesday, which means lent begins. I’m probably one of the least religious people that I know. Born a half-Catholic, half-Jew, a “Pizza Bagel,” I was raised Catholic but know absolutely nothing that I should. During CCD classes I was too busy scoping out boys in my class and never paid attention. I’d get home and when my Mom asked what I learned, I’d start talking about who I had a crush on. Regardless of religion, I love lent. To me, it’s a mini-resolution and always an interesting challenge.

In the past I’ve given up cheese, meat, soda, candy, and probably vegetables when I was a kid. This year I’ve decided to give up cheese again. It’s my absolute favorite food and this is going to be torture. No more late-night pizza, delicious omelets… Ugh.

Every year I give something up, but I never vow to add something into my life. Until now…

Here I give you the “Lent Challenge.” For the 46 days of Lent (Yes, it’s supposed to be 40 days but somehow it’s not and if you actually care, check out this article), I’m going to incorporate exercise into my life 5 days/week. I’ve printed out a handy dandy calendar with inspiration and each day I’ll log my exercise.

The rules are that it must be at least 30 minutes and walking around the city does not count, although I don’t have to go to the actual gym each time. I’m going to weigh myself today, just for shits and giggles, to see what the cheese and exercising combination does to my body. Unfortunately for all of you, I won’t be sharing that number.

Now that I’ve shared my challenge with all of you, I better kick ass because if not, I’ll be quite embarrassed. Check back on April 1st to see how I did! And let me know what you’re giving up for lent, if anything, in the comment section!

  1. Hahahaha as a fellow “mutt” I totally get it and I enjoy lent for the “challenge” as well. I haven’t decided what I’m sacrificing yet though…. I’m thinking bread but that makes me SO nervous!! Good luck– you’ll do great :)

  2. I’m giving up alcohol & also doing the work out thing…sounds like we will both be miserable until April!!
